Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury is a term used to describe an injury to the head that results in brain damage. Two types of injuries can lead to traumatic brain injury:

  • Closed Head Injury - an injury that occurs when the brain hits the inside of the skull. This type of injury can occur when the head strikes the windshield of a car or during whiplash.
  • Penetrating Head Injury - an injury that occurs when an object penetrates the skull.

Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

There are several causes of traumatic brain injury. These include:

  • Car accidents - 50% of all traumatic brain injuries occur during auto accidents.
  • Falls - the majority of traumatic brain injuries in the elderly occur during falls.
  • Firearms
  • Sports injuries - only 1% of all traumatic brain injuries can be attributed to sports injuries.

Signs of Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury is not always apparent immediately after the injury occurs. The symptoms of traumatic brain injury may not show up until days afterwards. Some symptoms to look for in traumatic brain injury cases include:

  • Consistent headache
  • Poor memory
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Neck pain
  • Slow speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears
