Prempro
Prempro is a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that combines estrogen and progestin. It is used as a substitute for taking estrogen alone, which has been found to increase the risk of uterine cancer. A seven-year study that sought to determine the effectiveness of long-term Prempro use was halted in July 2002 when researchers discovered that the drug led to an increased risk of breast cancer, stroke, and blood clots.
Side Effects of Prempro
The side effects of Prempro that led researchers to halt the study include:
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Breast cancer
- Blood clots
- Gallbladder disease
Researchers urge women not to panic; the risk of these side effects is low. But when compared with the entire population, the risks clearly outweighed the benefits. For women who are taking Prempro or other types of combination HRT on a short-term basis, the benefits may outweigh the risks. The researchers also recommend that women already on Prempro consult with a physician about the results of the study before stopping use of the drug.
