Environmental Disease & Occupational Hazards

Harmful toxins and known carcinogens can enter our environment and cause illness in a number of ways. Natural sources of toxins are scarce and the majority of the toxins that exist are due to human causes. Toxic spills, contaminated groundwater, and deadly fumes are just a few of the ways that the environment becomes polluted with toxic materials.

Toxic Exposure

People can become exposed to toxic materials in variety of ways. These include:

  • Contaminated groundwater
  • Foods
  • Exhaust fumes
  • Gas stations
  • Work - people who work in occupations that handle toxic materials on a daily basis are at the highest risk of exposure.

Toxic Materials

There are a variety of materials and chemicals that can cause serious illness in people who are exposed to them. These toxic materials include:

  • Benzene - causes diseases such as leukemia and a condition known as anemia
  • Vinyl chloride - causes diseases such as liver cancer
  • Mercury - symptoms of mercury poisoning are very similar to autism symptoms
  • Lead - causes damage to organs in the body such as the brain, liver, and kidneys
  • Asbestos - causes diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma
  • Silica - causes a disease known as silicosis
  • Manganese - causes a disease known as manganism
  • Toxic mold - causes illness and cognitive difficulties

Preventing Electrical Accidents

Electrical accidents can be prevented in the following ways:

  • Replace old and damaged wiring
  • Hire a qualified electrician
  • Avoid overloading outlets
  • Avoid using frayed or damaged electric cords
  • Use the proper wattage light bulbs in light fixtures
  • Install ground fault circuit interrupters

Occupational Safety

Most of the toxic materials listed above cause disease and illness in workers who have been exposed over a long period of time. In order to limit workers' exposure to these chemicals, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set limits for daily exposure.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by a toxic material, you may want to contact a personal injury attorney for more information.
